Behind the Design: The 1970s-Inspired Hideaway at Fishtown Urby 

Tucked behind a secret door within Fishtown Urby lies a space that feels like stepping into another world. Known as The Blue Room, this moody, monochromatic hideaway was designed by Yuria Kailich of Enso in collaboration with Urby.  

The Blue Room was envisioned as an “adult playroom”—a dreamy, multi-purpose hideaway designed for everything from meditative sound baths to high-energy karaoke parties. In describing the motivation behind the Blue Room, Yuria explains, “When we were thinking about how to make this speakeasy feel special, we asked what would actually feel different for the residents? There are so many luxury apartment buildings with beautiful amenity spaces, but we wanted this one to have a real sense of discovery. Something their friends would walk into and think, this is cool, this is unexpected.” 

The Art Of Conversation

Inspired by conversation pits from the which served as an intimate gathering place where people could linger and actually talk, Yuria focused on designing the space with organic curves and an intentional layout that would foster conversation and connection. 

A Study in Monochrome 
Drenched in a desaturated monochromatic blue with rich, varied textures, the space is soft yet sophisticated. The fully upholstered banquette is illuminated by a warm circular cove light on the ceiling that mirrors the curve of the sofa. These elements, complemented by tonal blue fabric-draped surfaces throughout, create a warm, cozy, and cool atmosphere.  

The Tension of Softness and Edge 
As a deliberate counterpoint to the softness of the plush sitting area, the kitchenette introduces industrial stainless steel. The design is seamless—the countertop subtly transforms into the sofa’s arm, creating a functional bridge between the utility of the kitchen and the comfort of the lounge.  

This layout allows for seamless hosting without interrupting the mood, while a hidden coat closet keeps the footprint clean and intentional.

An Urban Escape 
With surprises at every curve, the design of Blue Room is intimate and personal. It serves as an escape for residents that allows them to escape the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia, even for just a little bit.
